Adam Ant // Greek Theater // Los Angeles, CA
The original dandy highwayman, Adam Ant, concluded his US Anthems tour at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, CA.
While earlier in the year he brought the phenomenally successful Kings of the Wild Frontier tour to America, Ant’s current tour concentrates on the hits, along with a few well-loved b-sides and deep cuts. There was never a dull moment during the course of Ant’s set, as hit after hit kept the audience singing along. “Antmusic,” “Dog Eat Dog,” “Friend or Foe,” “Puss 'n' Boots,” “Viva Le Rock”….. each tune even more adored than the one that came before.
Back in the 80s, Ant was my favorite of the British “new wave,” but now, 35 years later, you realize just how timeless his songs really are. They don’t sound dated in the least, each one as fresh and unique as the day it was released. And Ant himself looked fantastic, he was obviously having a terrific time on stage, and it was hard to believe he was old enough to have been making music for as long as he has.
If Adam Ant comes to a town near you on a future tour, do yourself a favor. Antmusic is just as flavorful as it was in 1980.

Open Mike Eagle, Scallops Hotel, and Sammus // Knitting Factory, NY
On Tuesday, September 26th, Open Mike Eagle's "The Tour of the Robert Taylor Homes Tour" arrived in Brooklyn to Knitting Factory in Williamsburg. The show occurred only four days after the release of his fifth record, Brick Body Kids Still Daydream, which references the aforementioned Robert Taylor Homes, an apartment building complex on Chicago's South Side that were fully demolished 10 years ago where the LA based rapper's aunt resided.
Joining OME for the sold out Brooklyn date were two acts that were on different legs of the tour: Philadelphia rapper and producer Sammus (who opened shows in the midwest and Texas) and Scallops Hotel, another moniker of milo, who released who told you to think??!!?!?!?! back in August (he opened shows on the east coast). The final act on the tour, billy woods (booked for the west coast leg and some southern cities), didn't perform but was in the audience along with many fans both old and new. There was a surprise appearance from comedian Hannibal Buress who showed up to rap his verse from "Doug Stamper (Advice Raps)" which was on Open Mike Eagle's 2014 record Dark Comedy.
Mike remarked that the first time he performed at Knitting Factory it was on Halloween, snowing, and about eight people were in the audience. Six years later, he returned to the same stage to perform mostly songs from BBKSD and it was wonderful to witness how much his fanbase has grown.

Dead Cross' first North American tour began on August 10th and finally made its way to New York City for two dates in mid-September.
The California band features Dave Lombardo (ex-Slayer) and Mike Patton (Faith No More, Tomahawk, Mr. Bungle) who previously played together in Fantômas with Buzz Osbourne and Trevor Dunn. Their second New York show took place at Warsaw in Brooklyn on Wednesday, September 13th and the venue's slogan is "where pierogies meet punk."
Despite my attendance at many shows at this location over the years, I've never witnessed a band involve pierogies in their set...until Dead Cross. Needing to kill time during their set, a plate of pierogies and kielbasa were brought to the stage so that Patton and Lombardo could feed audience members.
Dead Cross were supported by Secret Chiefs 3, the long running band from Trey Spruance (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle) who were selected to play the majority of the shows on the headliner's initial tour.
