On May 6th, Canadian indie pop band Alvayys performed to a sold-out crowd at Mercury Ballroom! From the time the doors opened, a steady stream of fans filed into the venue, packing out the floor and balcony by the time the band went on stage. Opening the show this evening was Boston indie rock band Horse Jumper of Love. The band released their first album in 2016 and has since released 3 additional albums, performing a nice selection of songs this evening. Described as a “slow rock” band, their songs were melodic and had a slower tempo, with many people in the crowd grooving to the songs. Singer Dimitri Giannopoulos chatted a bit with the crowd between songs, but the band mainly just blew through their set and no doubt made some new fans this evening!

Closing out the evening was Alvvays and the crowd was more than ready! Since forming in 2011, the band has cultivated an ever-growing fan base and has released 3 albums, the last being Blue Rev, released in 2022. Starting their set with 2 songs from the latest album, “Easy On Your Own?” and “After The Earthquake”, they proceeded to perform several newer songs throughout their set, as well as some older tracks mixed in. Alvvays is a joy to watch perform, with a fun stage presence, feel-good music, and great stage production. Behind the stage was a projector screen that projected various images during their set, some with an almost psychedelic feel, and had the band awash in a myriad of colors. Singer/guitarist Molly Rankin interacted with the crowd a bit between songs, making jokes and thanking everyone for coming out this evening. Performing 19 songs before coming back out for a 3-song encore, they gave their fans plenty of songs this evening to sing and dance along to! Their encore consisted of one track from Blue Rev, “Pharmacist” and 2 songs from their 2014 self-titled first album, “Atop A Cake” and “Next of Kin”. There was such a feeling of joy in the venue this evening, with Alvvays having an adoring fan base, and everyone seemed to have a great time. The end of the show saw a lot of fans make a beeline to the merch table! I hope Alvvays stops in Louisville on their next tour and I’m sure I am not alone in that sentiment!

Dylan @ Bowery Ballroom - NYC

On the penultimate night of her Rebel Child Tour, London-based pop-rock singer Dylan took to the stage at New York City’s iconic Bowery Ballroom for a high-octane set that kept fans dancing and singing all night.

Anticipation was high, with fans lined up around the block before doors opened. Many had discovered Dylan after 2022’s stint opening for Ed Sheeran on his +–=÷x stadium tour, and many others found her through TikTok. “I’m always on TikTok and heard her that way. I got my daughter into her and when we heard she was going on tour, we had to come up for it” reveals one fan, who brought her pre-teen daughter with her. “It’s her first concert – she’s so excited”

It’s hard to think of a cooler first concert to experience. (My own was the Cheetah Girls). But Dylan is a bold and dynamic performer, leaving no inch of the stage uncovered and no fan ignored. She keeps her energy high, never flagging even after vigorous performances.

She takes fans through a solid catalog of uptempo pop rock like “Rebel Child,” “Every Heart but Mine,” and “No Romeo,” taking breaks for slower songs like “Blue” and an acoustic cover of Taylor Swift’s “Out of the Woods.” Fans were also treated to a cover of Sam Smith’s “Unholy” and an electric performance of her most recent release: “The Alibi.”

With an overall lively set, the show solidified Dylan as a force to be reckoned with, leaving a strong impression. Anyone leaving that set would have been impressed, whether it was their fiftieth concert or their first.

Dylan Gossett @ House of Blues - Houston

April 16th, 2024: Dylan Gossett @ House of Blues - Houston, TX

It was a humid, Tuesday night when we headed over to the House of Blues in Houston for Dylan Gossett’s show. It seemed the entire city was out and ready to jam out with Dylan and his touring band.

If you are not familiar with Dylan Gossett, he is a country singer-songwriter, hailing from Austin, Texas. So although this wasn’t his hometown show, we are close enough that it felt that way! He had a lot of his family and friends in the crowd, which made it feel even more special that he sold out the Bronze Peacock room at HOB.

Not only is he on a massive upward trajectory, you’d think Dylan had been releasing music for his entire life, but his first official release was only in 2023. It just goes to show that if you really believe in something or know what you want to do with your life, just do it. You never know where it will take you!

We were incredibly impressed with Dylan and the way he was able to captivate the fans in the audience. Everyone was hanging onto his every word and it was beautiful to witness. Our favorite songs from his set were

: “Coal,” “Beneath Oak Trees,” and “To Be Free.”

We will be keeping an eye out for Dylan Gossett and his upcoming releases and tour. Next time he is in Texas, we’ll be front row cheering our fellow Texans on!

Offset @ Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom - Chicago

Offset brought his A-game on Saturday night when he performed in front of a sold-out crowd at Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom for his “Set It Off” Tour. The show featured energetic performances from Offset and both male and female backup dancers, lots of strobe lights, and an elaborate stage set up with a long white staircase. The vibes were high the entire night with emotions you could feel from the back of the venue.

In addition to performing hits from his new album, Offset also had the crowd going wild to some of his classics with Migos such as “Bad and Boujee”, a fan favorite collab he did with Metro Boomin called “Ric Flair Drip”, and a dedication to his fellow Migos member Takeoff who sadly passed away in 2022. Adding on to the excitement, Offset also had a surprise guest appearance by G Herbo.

Overall, the “Set It Off” tour seems to be solidifying Offset’s status as a top-tier performer in the hip-hop world. Anyone who attends a show on this tour can definitely expect to leave an even bigger fan of him than they were before.

Lola Young @ Theater of Living Arts - Philadelphia

March 23rd 2024: Lola Young @ Theater of Living Arts - Philadelphia, PA

Lola Young took the stage in tears on Saturday, March 23rd in Philly. Before you assume the worst, it was the good kind of tears. As the band took the stage and started to play through the familiar intro to “Conceited”, the entire crowd sang together word for word before Lola even arrived on stage. Overwhelmed with the emotion of kicking off her first headlining show in Philadelphia, Lola ran out on stage and began to cry emotional happy tears and the crowd continued to sing.

Lola took a minute to compose herself and thank the crowd then continued with the set. Leaving all her emotions on the stage of happiness, anger, and amusement, you couldn’t help but be drawn in by Lola’s stage presence. As to not let us forget about past acoustic releases we even got treated to a few acoustic tracks like “3rd of Jan”. The set also included a handful of new unreleased tracks off her upcoming album later this year. All wrapped up into the encore of the song that started off the night, “Conceited”. I can’t wait to continue to see Lola continue to grow as an artist and inevitably play to larger and larger crowds.

Maddie Zahm @ World Cafe Live - Philadelphia

March 7th, 2024: Maddie Zahm, Leanna Firestone @ World Cafe Live - Philadelphia, PA

Maddie Zahm - Photos Courtesy of: Mandy Scott

The night started with a lovely acoustic performance by pop artist Leanna Firestone. Her interaction with the crowd was refreshing. World Cafe Live was packed with laughter and sing-alongs.

Maddie Zahm, the main act of the night (Pennsylvania Native). Tonight happened to be Maddie’s birthday, and the crowd (when they got the chance) roared into ‘Happy Birthday’ flustering the singer.

Maddie played a song titled ‘Sheets’ a new song from her upcoming album - it’s bass/drum heavy and extremely catchy - keep an ear out for that drop (I know I will). During (lady Killer) her pianist and guitarist switched instruments & the house turned the disco ball on it turned into a full-fledged party.

Maddie brought her “best friend/roommate” Katie Turner out for Funny Fat Friend instant goosebumps before the encore someone came out with a cake for Maddie & everyone sang happy birthday yet again.

One thing I feel about this tour is that there will always be fan interaction. I don’t think there was a single person who wasn’t singing along all night, this was such a personable show.

There are a little over 10 more dates on this tour I HIGHLY suggest you find yourself at a date near you!

Wilmette, Illinois Native K. Flay lit up Night 1 of her 2-night run in Chicago for her intimate venue tour. K. Flay kicked off the show with her raging new hit single “Carsick”, and engaged the crowd through oldies but goodies like High Enough. I haven't seen energy like that on a stage in quite some time, her presence was demanding for sure. Welcome back to Chicago, K. Flay, we here at The Photo Ladies can't wait to see you again soon!
