Fans, fittingly, endured the 95-degree heat wave in the Portland, Oregon area to show up for Glass Animals at McMenamins Edgefield, located in Troutdale, supported by Olga Gartland. Both came off sets at Outside Lands the past weekend as part of their Tour of the World Tour.
Fans sprawled on the lawn of Edgefield on towels and chairs. Before the sun went down, Olga Gartland ran out on stage to a recording of Bonnie Tyler’s, Holding Out For A Hero possibly an ode to her latest album, “Everybody Needs a Hero”. Accompanied by drummer, Sara Leigh Shaw, and guitarist/keyboardist, Scarlet Halton whom she lovingly called the Divas, began the set. She had a playfulness about her, rocking out on the stage with a melodic voice. A few from the pit sang along to Late to the Party. After she played a few of her songs, before covered Chappell Roan’s, Red Wine Supernova and started her sing-along.
The iconic pineapple (traditionally given away during “Pork Soda”) could be found stage left. Smoke blew from the pit, signalling the start of the show. Illustrations of galaxies displayed on the screen are having a conversation about their enthusiasm for the Glass Animals to take the stage.. The stage was designed as if the band was on a spaceship with computer monitors and a bubble that lit up different images, including one that said Edgefield as they began singing “Life Itself”. The space theme was supported throughout with visuals of planets and stars on the screen and lasers that audibly thrilled the crowd. During Creatures in Heaven, lead vocalist Wavey Davey was impressed by the sea of different colored cell phone lights from the crowd that a fan had set up. He later went out into the crowd during Gooey followed up by Vampire Bat, their latest single released a week prior. A noticeable breeze could be felt at the encore, but relief from the high temperatures could not be felt from their final song, Heat Waves.

Last month, English experimental indie pop group Glass Animals brought their Dreamland set to Brooklyn’s Mirage. Spanning quite a few different spaces, Glass Animals took advantage of it, providing gorgeous neon art installations in several areas of the venue for all the fans to take photos with. A dreamlike fog was pumped throughout the venue, and the whole experience was an all-encompassing artistic concept. They took full advantage of the giant LED screen the Mirage had to offer, while also incorporating a lot of their own large set pieces, which included a TV, a diving board, and the illusion of a pool. The setlist included all their greatest hits from Dreamland and How to Be a Human Being, and even included some throwbacks to the Zaba era.
This was the second night of two nights in Brooklyn, the last of the shows in the US for quite a bit according to frontman Dave Bayley, emphasizing how important the night was to him. The crowd included fans who traveled across the globe to be at this show, and it was easy to tell how important the night was to them as well. The energy of the crowd in the large venue never wavered, and even as the show ended, fans pouring out of the venue were still buzzing about the technicolor dream they had just been a part of.

If you haven’t yet heard “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals, I’m not sure you listen to music at all. The song is now one of my mother’s favorite car songs, and has been atop the charts for a LOOOOONG time. It’s the longest #1 on the charts since the Spice Girls “Wannabe,” - which yes, my mother also liked 25 years ago. Here’s our coverage of the Dreamland tour with a WHOLE lotta photos because this production was dreamy (no pun intended) and demanded an obscene amount of photos to be taken.
